AnkiDroid on your phone vs a dedicated Anki device

4 min read · 26 September 2026

Your phone can already run Anki, so why would you want a separate device? For many people the phone is fine. Here is an honest look at where each one wins.

Where the phone wins

  • You already own it and always have it with you.
  • It is the best place to add or edit cards quickly.
  • AnkiDroid is free (AnkiMobile on iPhone is a paid app).

Where a dedicated device wins

  • No notifications, feeds or messages: picking it up means reviewing.
  • Physical buttons to reveal and grade, so each card is one press and your eyes stay on the card.
  • Clear feedback: on Ankiboy the screen flashes the colour of the grade you pressed, with optional sound and vibration.
  • A clean boundary between study time and phone time.

Decks, scheduling and sync

Ankiboy uses AnkiDroid under the hood, so your decks, scheduling and review history stay the same. You sign in with your AnkiWeb account (by scanning a code with your phone), sync, and your cards come across. After reviewing, you sync again and your progress appears on your other devices.

If your decks rely on complex templates or unusual add-ons, ask us to check them before you buy.
